It’s day 10 of our self-care series, and we’re transitioning from soul-care to body-care. As we do, I think it’s important to remember where our strength lies, whether it’s the strength that helps us forgive someone or the strength it takes to get out of bed in the morning.

John 15:5 is one of my favorite verses because I value being independent. I don’t like to ask for help. I want to be seen as able to handle anything and handle it well. But that is pride. In fact, it’s godlessness—living as if I don’t need help from even God. (See Jerry Bridge’s excellent book, Respectable Sins for more on this.)

Jesus’ words in John remind me I can’t do it on my own. I shouldn’t even try. I must admit my dependence on Him each day, for apart from Him I can do nothing.

So as we move forward to talk about exercise and making wise food decisions and getting enough sleep, remember it’s all through His power. Abide in Him.

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness .. 1 Peter 1:3a
